DLP uses a DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) reflective chip with a high-speed spinning color wheel. Light passes through the wheel, sequentially outputting red, green, and blue. Engineering projectors typically use larger DMD sizes: 0.65-inch, 0.95-inch, or 1.38-inch panels.
3LCD uses three independent LCD panels for Red, Green, and Blue light paths. All channels operate simultaneously, projecting full-color images without sequential color cycling.
Independent color channels achieve ΔE < 2 accuracy, faithfully reproducing pigments and ancient painting tones. Same-batch units deliver excellent consistency across large blended surfaces. Completely rainbow-free for comfortable extended viewing — ideal for static artwork displays.
Color-wheel imaging produces banding on dark paintings. Multi-projector calibration is costly. Extended viewing may induce rainbow artifacts. Exception: three-chip DLP suits immersive dome theaters and flying cinema.
Native ultra-high contrast keeps nighttime shadows clean and crisp. Near-instantaneous DMD response delivers blur-free effects and pin-sharp mapping contours. IP5X-rated sealed engines handle harsh environments. Models scale to 20,000+ lumens — DLP dominates the ultra-high-output segment.
Blacks appear gray, losing shadow depth. Fast motion exhibits edge blur. Equivalent-brightness models are larger with greater cooling demands. Exception: tri-color laser 3LCD for indoor immersive light museums with soft palettes.
| Dimension | 3LCD Projector | DLP Projector | Best-Fit Scenario |
|---|---|---|---|
| Color | High accuracy, uniform, zero rainbow | High contrast, deep blacks; possible rainbow | 3LCD: Museums DLP: Mapping / Stage |
| Motion | Minor blur on fast motion | Low latency, zero blur, strong dynamics | DLP: Shows, surveillance |
| Uniformity | Factory-calibrated, simple setup | Same-batch variance; costly calibration | 3LCD: Gallery walls, multi-screen |
| Stability | Good static; higher dust wear | Sealed dust-proof; 24/7 durable | DLP: Outdoor, command centers |
| Black Level | Blacks tend toward gray | Pure blacks; strong contrast | DLP: Nighttime, cinematic |
| Brightness | 5,000–15,000 lumens | 6,000–40,000 lumens | Ultra-large outdoor: DLP only |
| Use Case | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Artifacts, paintings, indoor multi-panel exhibition walls | 3LCD |
| Outdoor shows, architectural mapping, stage, 24/7 command rooms | DLP |
| Graphic presentations, party-building halls, portrait displays | 3LCD |
| Large auditoriums, surveillance walls, heavy dynamic video | DLP |
