Is the projector you're using truly "high refresh rate"?

There is a confusing trend in the projector market: many low-cost domestic home projectors heavily advertise 120Hz high refresh rate, while well-known international brands rarely promote this feature. As a professional Chinese projector brand focused on engineering laser solutions, FLYIN also does not list 120Hz as a core selling point. Many integrators wonder: is our hardware incapable, or is there another reason? Let’s break down the logic behind this choice.

First, let’s clarify what “120Hz” really means on most budget consumer projectors. Most affordable LCD and small-DMD home units labelled 120Hz only support 120Hz signal input. They can accept 120fps signals sent from PS5 or PC, or simulate high refresh via MEMC frame interpolation. The imaging panel itself still refreshes at 60Hz. Many of these models reuse mature high-refresh LCD panels designed for televisions, with HDMI 2.1 and 120Hz printed prominently for e-commerce traffic. This is purely a sales tactic: eye-catching specs attract home users. The trade-off is weaker contrast, uneven brightness, poorer color accuracy and shorter light source lifespan. FLYIN is not built for casual home entertainment or gaming consumers. We specialize in professional engineering projection, and our priority list is completely different.

FLYIN offers both DLP and 3LCD projectors, engineered for professional applications rather than gaming-focused high refresh. Our systems power architectural 3D mapping, floor-and-wall immersive installations, dome shows, outdoor cultural tourism, multi-unit edge blending, exhibition halls and live events. These use cases have very different requirements from home cinema or gaming:

  1. Most professional content is mastered at 24fps, 30fps or 60fps. Feature films, promotional clips, immersive art and live feeds are rarely produced in 120fps. For these projects, the key priorities are clean 24p playback, stable color accuracy, strong contrast, high uniformity and long-term operational reliability. MEMC interpolation creates the unnatural “soap-opera effect”, which ruins the artistic timing of mapping and immersive content. Worse still, MEMC introduces input lag. In multi-projector blending setups, inconsistent lag causes misaligned blend zones and out-of-sync imagery — a major headache for system integrators.

  1. Engineering optical hardware allocates cost to brightness, contrast, color performance, optics, thermal design, lenses and synchronization. Our 3LCD lineup delivers consistent color matching, equal color brightness and no rainbow effect, ideal for galleries and commercial displays. Similar to SXRD / D-ILA devices, 3LCD panels have slower response characteristics. True 4K native 120Hz requires upgraded drive circuits, stricter cooling and precise synchronization for three-color channels, which drastically raises costs and reduces stability during extended runtime. For most engineering deployments, this extra expense delivers no practical benefit. Our flagship DLP models are built on TI DMD platforms and have native high-refresh potential at the hardware level. Even so, we do not enable or advertise 120Hz as a default feature. Native high-refresh DMD chips carry a significant premium. We only activate native 120Hz on custom orders for high-speed 3D, simulation and premium gaming theatre projects. For standard cultural tourism, mapping and blending jobs, we run a stable low-latency 60Hz signal path to guarantee synchronized playback and reliable 24/7 operation. For engineering projectors, the ultimate benchmark is not an impressive spec sheet. It is steady performance for thousands of operating hours: consistent colour, no flickering, stable blend edges and controlled brightness decay.

Different Priorities Across Brands
  • Budget consumer projectors: Prioritize visible marketing features — 120Hz, auto-focus, auto-keystone correction. Optimized for online retail, often at the cost of contrast, uniformity and long-term reliability. Targeted at individual home users.

  • Premium international home cinema brands (Sony, JVC, Epson): Focus on cinematic quality, black level, colour accuracy and native 24p. They also avoid pushing gaming high refresh, serving audiophile-visual enthusiasts.
  • FLYIN professional laser projectors: Prioritize project delivery reliability. Our core metrics are ANSI lumens, screen uniformity, dynamic contrast, DCI-P3 / Rec.709 colour gamut, lens quality, lens shift, edge blending, 3D sync, laser lifespan, dust-proof thermal design, RS232 / LAN control and multi-unit synchronization. We support custom high-refresh configurations upon request for simulators, high-speed 3D and dedicated gaming theatres. But 120Hz is never a standard feature for all products. For the vast majority of our clients — system integrators, cultural tourism contractors and exhibition operators — synchronization, colour consistency and round-the-clock stability are far more valuable than a rarely used high-refresh spec.
Quick Glossary

✅ 120Hz Signal Input: The projector can receive 120fps signals from upstream sources (this is what most cheap home projectors offer) ✅ Native DMD / Panel 120Hz: The imager physically refreshes 120 times per second, no algorithmic frame insertion. Low latency, suitable for high-speed 3D and simulation; high cost ✅ MEMC Interpolated 120Hz: Software generates extra frames for smoother motion. Adds input lag. Not recommended for multi-projector blending or mapping, due to sync risks and altered original creative look ✅ FLYIN High-Refresh Strategy: No gimmicky default MEMC high refresh. Premium DLP units support native 120Hz by custom request. Standard mapping, blending and outdoor projects use a proven stable low-latency 60Hz pipeline

To sum up: Consumer projectors compete on marketing specs. Engineering projectors compete on reliable site performance. FLYIN does not widely advertise 120Hz not because we cannot implement it, but because our scenarios and customers demand synchronized, colour-accurate, long-running professional laser projection. High refresh is an optional custom capability, not a universal marketing gimmick.
